Nightwing – Year One | Comics

Before becoming the legendary crime-fighter Nightwing, Dick Grayson was fired by Batman for disobedience as his partner Robin, the Boy Wonder!

Before he became the solo vigilante hero, former circus acrobat Dick Grayson was Batman's sidekick, the first Robin. Recently, Dick has become very aggressive and cocky just as he became more experienced in crime-fighting over time.

On top of that, his attention is parted between college and leading Teen Titans while growing up. One of these nights, he cuts it too close to reach as backup when his mentor was taking Clayface. Despite being told to stay back, he recklessly went after Matt Hagen but managed to take the goon in mud down.

Back in Batcave, Bruce and Dick are greeted by their trusted butler Alfred Pennyworth before he went inside to get some snacks for them. Locking him out, the Knight decides to have a talk with his Squire, reminding his duties as his lieutenant.

Their argument got heated and Bruce ended up firing Grayson as The Boy Wonder, because he thinks that he became very arrogant. They both knew that this would eventually take place and then the inevitable happened before Alfred could arrive at the scene and step in for a last-minute damage control.

Shocked at this decision and current development, Dick takes a trip to clear his head out and find a way on his own. He arrives at Daily Planet, Metropolis, seeking for reporter Clark Kent, which raises suspicion to his colleague Lois Lane as his name rang a bell.

Clark is also surprised to hear Bruce’s action towards him to which the latter admits that he screwed up. As Lois intervene into their chat, they both managed to get away to respond an emergency situation. After dealing with it alongside Superman, Grayson receives some valuable advice as at that moment when he was not sure what to do next.

Looking for his roots, he goes back at Haly's Circus after counseling with Big-Blue about where to look for direction. He made quite an entrance by stopping two goons from robbing his former family without a 'Rang.

He rejoined the circus and is welcomed by new members of the crew and eventually his father's colleague Boston Brand AKA Deadman. Despite disapproval from the Caped Crusader, Alfred insists on putting the Robin costume in a display as a reminder and suggests that he needs some mending.

Batman meets Jason Todd in Crime Alley at his youth, trying to steal the tyre off his Batmobile and locked him up in Batcave but the boy is street-smart to quickly take on the role of newest Boy Wonder. Making a slight variant of his father's old costume, Dick Grayson dons a new suit and took the name Nightwing.

He heads back to Gotham City to meet and greet with Batgirl and Commissioner Gordon to inform his return as a solo hero. Meanwhile, Killer Croc kidnaps Alfred who was disguised as Two-Face for "The Gauntlet" test and now the former and newest Robin needs to work together to save him.

Nightwing – Year One

Renowned comic-book writer Chuck Dixon (Batgirl – Year One, Superman/Tarzan – Sons of the Jungle) and Scott Beaty plotted out this story arc of Nightwing's origin titled "Nightwing – Year One". This focuses on young Dick Grayson’s path to become the solo hero of his own right and out of the shadow of Batman's wings.

The tale runs for six issues from second ongoing volume of Nightwing monthly series, collecting issues #101-106. All six issues were drawn by penciller Scott McDaniel (Batman – Dead to Rights, Daredevil/Batman – Eye for an Eye), who also provided cover arts.

The story shows how Dick Grayson as Nightwing learns new things and starts making his own decisions, which led him to be a greater crime fighter of DC Universe. After being recruited by Batman, Dick has been trained in martial arts where his physical prowess helped and for the first time in a while, he picked up anything other than Batarang.

A pair of Juggler's devil sticks became primary weapon of choice for him and why he gets to choose that is showcased in "Year One". Aside from members of Bat-Family, members of the Teen Titans like Beast Boy and Donna Troy made cameo appearance.
